Objective
The mountain navigation course has been designed to deliver the essential skills required to navigate in the mountains whether in good conditions or poor visibility. If you want to feel confident on the fells and mountains when the weather turns nasty and the cloud sets in come and learn the skills to get you off the hills safely.

Usually North Wales

Duration
Two full days + night session in winter months.

Client numbers
Two to six.

Prerequisites
There are no minimum skills for this course as the programme is easily adapted to individual clients’ needs. Novice navigators are very welcome. A basic level of fitness is required.

Personal equipment
The course is held in the mountains of North Wales and clients will therefore need the usual hill kit (See kit lists). and a good quality head torch (ensure you have plenty of battery life).

Programme
This, two-day course, is delivered in mountain terrain and away from path systems. Skills covered include: map interpretation and symbols, pacing, timing, taking and walking on compass bearings, contouring, aiming off, hand-railing, catching features etc.

Courses held between October and March include, on day one, the additional element of night-time navigation. This enables clients to practice the very important skill of navigating off the hill in darkness and experience navigating in poor visibility.

Accommodation
Accommodation is usually of a bunkhouse type at the Galt-Y-Glyn Hotel near Llanberis. Single, double or shared rooms are available upon request.

Alternate course locations may be utilised in consultation with clients if requested.
